Violence: Non-partner sexual violence prevalence (%)
Short name:
NPSV
Topic:
Risk factors
Rationale:
Aggregating individual women’s experiences of sexual violence by someone other than a partner shows the level of exposure to sexual violence that women in a given population experience.
Definition:
The percentage of women in a given population who have ever experienced sexual violence by someone other than a partner
Disaggregation:
Age, Boundaries : Administrative regions
Method of measurement
Responses to survey questions asked of women about experience of specific acts of sexual violence by different perpetrators. These questions are ideally asked by specially trained interviewers in household surveys dedicated to measurement of violence against women. Alternatively, other population-based surveys with modules on violence can be used.
Method of estimation:
Lifetime rates of NPSV are estimated by region by pooling data from population-based studies in models that control for survey type, interviewer training, whether survey inquired about single or multiple perpetrators, and whether study was national or subnational, and whether prevalence refers to lifetime. Results weighted by population size and age distribution.
Method of estimation of global and regional aggregates:
Results weighted by population size and age distribution.
Other possible data sources:
Specific population surveys
Preferred data sources:
Household surveys
Expected frequency of data dissemination:
Annual
Expected frequency of data collection:
Every 5 years
Comments:
Population-based survey data are preferable to clinic-based or other surveillance data since violence is seriously underreported in these other sources. Prevalence is calculated using statistical modeling to account for the differences in data quality.
