WHA Resolution 66.12 on neglected tropical diseases
Definition:
Yaws cases can be confirmed either serologically or by PCR. WHO defines a serologically confirmed yaws case as a suspected case who is confirmed through dual positive serology (either DPP-dually positive or TPHA/TPPA+RPR positive). WHO defines a PCR-confirmed yaws case as a case that is positive to Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
Method of measurement
Yaws suspected cases may be detected passively, when seeking care at health facility. However, in the context of yaws eradication, active case search should be organized in endemic and previously endemic areas in order to look for yaws cases. These active case search activities may be organized in an integrated manner with other skin NTDs programmes. All yaws suspected cases (be actively or passively detected) should be recorded on a standardized yaws case register (WHO/Yaws003 form) and reported to upper levels of the surveillance system.
Yaws suspected or probable cases should be confirmed either by serology (either DPP-dually positive or TPHA/TPPA+RPR positive) or by PCR. The reuslt of the confirmatory test is to be recorded on the yaws case register. If one of these confirmatory tests is positive, then the case should be considered as confirmed.
Data should then be reported by national eradication programmes annually to WHO. The frequency of reporting to WHO may go down to monthly or weekly basis in the future when approaching the eradication goal.
