The World Health Assembly adopted a voluntary global target of a 25% relative reduction of the prevalence of raised blood pressure by 2025, against a 2010 baseline, as part of the Global action plan for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases 2013–2020.

1,201 population-based studies that included measured blood pressure and data on blood pressure treatment in 104 million individuals aged 30-79 years were used to estimate trends in hypertension and hypertension diagnosis, treatment and control from 1990 to 2019.
