Dying between the exact ages 30 and 70 years from cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, or chronic respiratory diseases, probability (SDG 3.4.1)
Short name:
Risk of NCD deaths, premature
Topic:
Mortality and burden of disease
Rationale:
Disease burden from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among adults - the most economically productive age span - is rapidly increasing in developing countries due to ageing and health transitions. Measuring the risk of dying from target NCDs is important to assess the extent of burden from mortality due NCDs in a population. This indicator has been selected to measure NCD mortality for the "25 by 25" NCD mortality target (see links below).
Definition:
Per cent of 30-year-old-people who would die before their 70th birthday from any of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, or chronic respiratory disease, assuming that s/he would experience current mortality rates at every age and s/he would not die from any other cause of death (e.g., injuries or HIV/AIDS).
Method of estimation:
Probability of death between exact age 30 and exact age 70 was calculated using cause-specific mortality rates in each 5-year age group and standard life table methods. The estimates are derived from the WHO Global Health Estimates (GHE). These estimates represent the best estimates of WHO, computed using standard categories, definitions and methods to ensure cross-country comparability, and may not be the same as official national estimates. Due to changes in input data and methods, the revisions of GHE are not comparable to previously published WHO estimates. The current estimates for 2020 and 2021 are likely underestimated in countries where good quality vital registration data is lacking at the time of GHE2021 production. This is because the modelled estimates can not fully account for deaths from the four major NCDs that were indirectly attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. The data for 2020 and 2021 need to be interpreted with caution.
Other possible data sources:
Household surveys
Sample or sentinel registration systems
Preferred data sources:
Civil registration with complete coverage and medical certification of cause of death
