Dementia requires a broad response from the health and social care system (both public and private), other government sectors and stakeholders. The development and coordination of comprehensive dementia programmes through a multisectoral approach will support the recognition of the complex needs of people with dementia and address those needs within the context of each country.

The Global action plan sets a target of 75% of countries having developed or updated national policies, strategies, plans or frameworks for dementia, either stand-alone or integrated into other policies/plans, by 2025.

The GDO measures policy progress by collecting information on the level of prioritization given to dementia at ministry level, the existence of national, subnational or integrated dementia plans, including funding allocation towards the implementation of dementia plans and legislation related to dementia.
