HIV continues to be a major global public health issue, having claimed 42.3 million [35.7–51.1 million] lives so far.
In 2023, 630 000 [500 000–820 000] people died from HIV-related causes globally. There were approximately 39.9 million [36.1–44.6 million] people living with HIV (PLHIV) at the end of 2023 with 1.3 million [1.0–1.7 million] people becoming newly infected with HIV in 2023 globally.
The WHO African Region is the most affected region, with 26.0 million [23.6–28.8 million] people living with HIV in 2023. Also, the WHO African Region accounts for 50% of the global new HIV infections.
