Rationale:
One of the greatest challenges to STI prevention and control is the epidemic of AMR strains of N. gonorrhoeae. Monitoring the susceptibility patterns of N. gonorrhoeae is essential for detecting and tracking emerging resistance and adjusting treatment recommendations for optimal outcomes. Since 1992, countries monitor the emergence of resistance to N. gonorrhoeae through WHO GASP; however, the number of countries reporting data to GASP varies over the years. Tracking the number of countries participating in GASP is a good indicator of GASP implementation and data availability.
Definition:
What it measures: weather a country reported susceptibility testing of at least one drug (i.e., ceftriaxone, cefixime, ciprofloxacin/quinolones and/or azithromycin) to GASP in a specific year. Numerator: Number of countries reporting susceptibility testing of at least one drug (i.e., ceftriaxone, cefixime, ciprofloxacin/quinolones and/or azithromycin) to GASP Denominator: None
Method of measurement
According to the regional or national surveillance protocol, countries can report to GASP AMR data on pharyngeal, anogenital, urethral or another anatomical site N. gonorrhoea strains for at least one of the following antibiotics: ceftriaxone, cefepime, azithromycin and ciprofloxacin. For each antibiotic, countries are requested to report the aggregated number of tested and of resistant isolates. For this indicator, a country is considered to be reporting to GASP for a specific year if it reported on at least one N.gonorrhoea isolate-antibiotic combination.
Method of estimation:
Isolate-based resistance surveillance data are reported by national reference laboratories to the regional reference laboratory focal points, and collated data are then submitted to WHO-GASP. WHO compiles this data and compute this indicator.
