Director-General's opening remarks at the UNGA High-level Meeting on AMR - Political Leadership and Action on Antimicrobial Resistance: The Road to the 2024 UNGA High-level Meeting on AMR

Organizers: Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance

5 October 2022

Your Excellency Prime Minister Mia Mottley;

Excellencies, dear colleagues and friends,

I am glad to see so many of you again after joining Prime Minister Mottley and Prime Minister Hasina, and Minister Fearne for the Global Leaders Group side event in New York.

That meeting was an important step in laying the groundwork for the upcoming High-level meeting on antimicrobial resistance in 2024.

The Global Leaders Group has a critical role to play in advocacy and in the effort to address antimicrobial resistance.

It’s vital that your work is connected and aligned with other major global health initiatives, including those to strengthen the world’s defences against epidemics and pandemics.

As you know, WHO Member States are now negotiating a legally-binding accord for pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.

I commend the advocacy of the Global Leaders Group for including antimicrobial resistance in the pandemic accord.

Once again, I reiterate our support on behalf of the Quadripartite organisations for the work of the Global Leaders Group.

Thank you, Prime Minister for your leadership and thank you all for your continuing advocacy and action to address antimicrobial resistance.

I wish you a successful meeting.

I thank you.
