The WHO epidemiologist in Kigali, Rwanda visited Goma, Zaire on 13 November to investigate rumours of suspected cholera. Specimens from two patients in the Goma central hospital were obtained and have now been investigated in the laboratory. The investigations confirmed infection with Vibrio cholerae. The patients were local residents of Sake situated six km from the Mugunga refugee camp. At present it is not possible to reach this area. The WHO team in Kigali is being reinforced by WHO's Cholera Task Force Coordinator who departs for Kigali on Saturday 16 November.
