Disease Outbreak Reported
From November 1997 up to 17 January 1997, an outbreak of meningitis caused 522 cases with 97 deaths. Meningococcal meningitis is suspected but laboratory investigations are not yet completed. The Ministry of Health has requested 300 000 doses of meningococcal meningitis vaccine A/C and 10,000 doses of oily chloramphenicol in addition to injection material to control the epidemic.
