Disease Outbreak Reported
Sporadic suspected cases of Marburg haemorrhagic fever have been reported from Durba,
Democratic Republic of Congo
since the last update. A new case of Marburg has been confirmed by virological tests
performed by National Institute for
Virology (NIV), South Africa. The patient was a 30 year-old gold miner working in a mine
in the Durba area, who became
ill on 8 January 2000.
Fifteen suspect cases were reported during November and December 1999. Clinical samples
from 12 were submitted to
NIV for testing. All of these were found to be negative for Marburg and other pathogens.
