Delivering on our commitments on NCDs: accelerating our work within EPW2 and fulfilling the SDG commitments
30 September 2025, 10:00 to 11:30 (CEST), online
Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) remain the leading cause of avoidable death and disability across the WHO European Region. With only 5 years left before the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) deadline, and as several key Regional strategies (on NCD prevention, tobacco, alcohol and physical activity) expire in 2025, urgent action is needed to accelerate progress.
This session will reflect on the outcomes of the Fourth United Nations General Assembly High-level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of NCDs and the Promotion of Mental Health and Well-being, highlight new data on the economic benefits of tackling NCDs, and discuss progress towards agreed targets. It will also explore Member States’ perspectives on the development of a comprehensive strategy under the second European Programme of Work, 2025–2030 (EPW2) to reduce avoidable mortality from NCDs, ensuring the Region delivers on its commitments in the final stretch of the SDG era.
Participants will hear insights from Member States, civil society and youth representatives, as well as review the latest evidence from WHO and partners. The event’s main objectives are to inform Member States on ways to strengthen implementation, share lessons and align around renewed commitments to prevent and control NCDs.
Participation in the event is by invitation only.
This event is part of a series of side events to be held in the weeks preceding the 75th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe, engaging delegates, partners and health experts on developments, initiatives, tools and new reports relevant to health across the Region.
