Technical workshop on Novel and Emerging Nicotine and Tobacco Products

23 June 2022
Copenhagen, Denmark
Novel nicotine and tobacco products such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products are gaining popularity worldwide, especially among adolescents and young adults. The diversity of the products, their design features and characteristics, makes it hard for countries to regulate them and monitor their use in the population.

The WHO Regional Office for Europe, in collaboration with WHO Headquarters and the European Commission, is organizing a technical workshop to provide a platform for information exchange and direct engagement with experts. It also aims to contribute to building capacity of EU Member States to effectively regulate these products, and those protecting young people from tobacco and nicotine addiction.

The event will convene tobacco control focal points from the Member States of the European Union, as well as invited experts from the European Commission, WHO and WHO FCTC Secretariat.

The workshop’s discussions will include the following topics:

  • Latest data: science and marketing of novel nicotine and tobacco products
  • Challenges, achievements and regulatory needs of the European Union in relation to these products
  • What further support is needed from WHO and the European Commission in addressing the challenges related to novel nicotine and tobacco products?
