World Polio Day 2022: 20 years polio-free Europe

24 October 2022

On World Polio Day, the WHO European Region celebrates 20 years of sustained polio-free status. This historic achievement has been made possible thanks to the unwavering dedication of parents, governments, donors and civil society organizations; the tireless efforts of health professionals working with families and communities to make every child’s vaccination a priority; and the many public health professionals who ensure that any circulation of poliovirus in the Region is detected and quickly interrupted.

The Region’s milestone sends out a strong message – that by working together and harnessing our collective energies to overcome the last hurdles, we can fulfil our promise of a polio-free world for all.

A look at the past, and what is still to come

To celebrate the efforts made to date and to renew our commitment to the work ahead, WHO/Europe has initiated a social media campaign and is hosting a commemorative event at the UN City building in Copenhagen, Denmark, at 17:00–18:00 CET.

A film will be shown, and an exhibit extending on the themes of the film will be on display for attendees as well as staff and visitors in the UN City building. The event and exhibit will address the historical impact of polio in the Region, how polio-free status was achieved and sustained, and how to ensure that it is sustained in the future.

The event will be opened by WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, and will include representatives of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, including Rotary International President Jennifer Jones.
