12th meeting of the European Regional Verification Commission (RVC) for Measles and Rubella Elimination

The European Regional Verification Commission (RVC) conducted its annual meeting to review the 2022 annual status updates on measles and rubella elimination in the WHO European Region Member States. The RVC assessed the status of measles and rubella elimination in each Member State in the year 2022 and provided recommendations related to immunization coverage and disease surveillance.

The RVC concluded the following, based on reports submitted for 2022 and previous years.

  • 33 (62%) Member States provided evidence to demonstrate the elimination of endemic measles (interruption for at least 36 months) and 49 (92%) for the elimination of endemic rubella.
  • 33 (62%) provided evidence for the elimination of both measles and rubella.
  • 8 Member States (15%) interrupted measles transmission, 7 of which (13%) did so for 12 months and 1 (2%) for 24 months.
  • 9 (17%) Member States were considered endemic for measles.
  • 2 (4%) Member States were considered to have re-established measles transmission.
  • A retrospective review of measles status is pending for 1 Member State (2%) and a retrospective review of rubella status is pending for 4 (8%) Member States.
