World AMR Awareness Week 2023

18 – 24 November 2023

World AMR Awareness Week brings together global activists with a shared goal – to control antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Controlling AMR is at the heart of operations every day for WHO and partners. But for one week every year we go further, raising the volume with colleagues across the human, veterinary and environment health sectors, under the umbrella of the Quadripartite signed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the United Nations Environment Programme, WHO and the World Organization for Animal Health.

We invite everyone from patients to health-care workers, farmers to pet owners, young people to retirees, to join us to educate, advocate and take action.

For example:

  • refresh your knowledge of simple things you can do to prevent the development of resistance;
  • post or repost the World AMR Awareness Week materials in the campaign package below on social media;
  • keep an eye out for the personal stories we will be posting on Instagram throughout the week and repost to your social media accounts;
  • take a pledge to be an Antibiotic Guardian; and
  • test your knowledge with our AMR Quiz.

If you are a decision-maker or professional involved in AMR control, explore the European Roadmap on AMR, with 53 evidence-based interventions to choose from.

It’s not too late.

AMR occurs when bacteria, parasites, viruses and fungi become resistant to antimicrobial medicines that are used to treat the infections they cause. As a result of AMR, antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines become ineffective and infections increasingly difficult – or even impossible – to treat.
