Statistics Poland (Główny Urząd Statystyczny) and WHO have teamed up to explore ways to tackle data limitations in the context of the Ukrainian refugee crisis. In 2022, WHO and Statistics Poland conducted the first national study to cover a representative sample of Ukrainian refugees in Poland, using mixed methods to unveil not just the numbers, but the human narratives behind the refugee crisis. The methodology has now been applied to a second round of surveys conducted in 2023.

This launch event will present the comparative findings of these surveys and highlight the importance of applying a mixed-method approach to data collection from countries around the world – whether they are hosting or sending refugees and migrants or are transit countries for them.

This event will also showcase the efforts of Statistics Poland and WHO to integrate multiple data sources. This integration of quantitative and qualitative surveys, and administrative and big data to develop robust estimates on the health of refugees and migrants, can be applied to assessing the health needs of these vulnerable groups around the world. Moreover, at the event, selected countries will present their country’s data needs and their experiences with increasing the robustness of estimates and filling data gaps.

It is hoped that the event will serve as a catalyst to refresh collaborative approaches on health and statistics and will solidify the planning of future joint efforts to improve data-driven health responses in emergency settings.
