WHO Kazakhstan trains health professionals on emergency management in Shymkent

A 5-day training on leadership in health emergencies for 40 health professionals from the Ministry of Health and Ministry for Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan concluded on 22 November 2024 in Shymkent, Kazakhstan.

The main goal of the training, organized by the WHO Country Office in Kazakhstan with the support of the Learning and Capacity Development unit at WHO headquarters and the WHO European Centre for Preparedness for Humanitarian and Health Emergencies, with financial support from the Pandemic Fund, was to consolidate and strengthen emergency management skills in interagency collaboration between the staff of the 2 ministries.

The participants completed over 40 hours of intensive training aimed at enhancing critical non-technical skills essential for effective emergency management, such as team coordination, problem-solving, decision-making, and effective communication and negotiation with various stakeholders. In addition, the participants worked in groups on a proposed emergency scenario involving an earthquake, developing and presenting their emergency response plans.

Reflecting on the impact of the training, participant Didar Kazhkenov representing the Ministry for Emergency Situations noted, “The most important thing we have learned from this training is making use of our leadership skills, not only during the training, but also in real-life situations. I think a leadership mindset and motivation are crucial for becoming a true leader.”

Dr Skender Syla, representative of the WHO Country Office in Kazakhstan, emphasized the importance of conducting the training at country level and highlighted the relevance of the skills acquired. “The core aspects of this course focus on building a collaborative spirit during emergencies, communicating effectively, and properly preparing and planning for any emergency. We hope that building core capacities in these important areas will put the country in a better position to respond to various emergencies that can affect Kazakhstan in the future,” said Dr Syla.

The training, adapted to the local context and conducted in Kazakhstan for the first time, offers a blueprint for similar trainings to be held in other countries.
