Briefing on the second European Programme of Work for WHO collaborating centres

18 December 2024

Event highlights

WHO collaborating centres engage in EPW2 development

WHO collaborating centres engage in EPW2 development Representatives from over 80 WHO collaborating centres in the WHO European Region expressed their strong support for the themes of forthcoming hearings that are being organized to guide the development of the second European Programme of Work, 2025–2030 (EPW2), at a consultation on 18 December 2024. Participants also welcomed the open, participatory format planned for these hearings.

Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, opened the meeting. He commented, “We want the EPW2 to be truly co-created by our Member States and informed by the perspectives of a wide range of partners to make sure that priorities for WHO are well chosen, but also so that the EPW2 can serve as a compass for health in Europe and central Asia, for countries and partners alike.”

Collaborating centres will help to shape the content of the EPW2 and ensure representative participation from technical networks. During this development phase, their specific roles will be to:

  • contribute evidence and perspectives on the issues covered in the hearings;
  • participate as panellists and active contributors to inform the strategic directions and priorities of the EPW2; and
  • promote participation in the hearings and subsequent consultations with technical networks.

A series of group discussions were organized to explore how WHO and collaborating centres should act collectively to improve health and well-being in the Region. Common themes emerging from these discussions included the need to:

  • take account of the interdependencies among different areas and sectors beyond health, and work intersectorally;
  • address misinformation and fake news; and
  • harness the potential of community care to build trust and deliver effective services.
