The WHO Country Office in Kyrgyzstan, in collaboration with the Centre for Standardization and Metrology (Kyrgyzstandard) under the Ministry of Economy; the Ministry of Health; the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry; the Ministry of Economy; Kyrgyz Economic University; the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations; and the scientific community, hosted a workshop to reassess the national Codex programme in Kyrgyzstan.
The workshop aimed to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the national Codex Alimentarius (food code) structure, document recent developments, and identify key areas for improving food quality control and safety. A similar assessment was carried out between 2017 and 2021 under the Codex Trust Fund project, successfully implemented in Kyrgyzstan.
Participants actively engaged in discussions, focusing on the three core elements of the diagnostic tool used to assess national Codex programmes. Special attention was given to identifying achievements, addressing gaps in the system, and proposing enhancements to food quality and safety control mechanisms. Recommendations included strengthening monitoring and assessment methods and organizing awareness-raising seminars for specialists.
Bolotbek Nurmatov, Director of Kyrgyzstandard, emphasized the significance of the workshop, highlighting its role in fostering collaboration among key institutions. He noted that reassessing the National Codex Programme would benefit all stakeholders involved in the national food safety and quality control system.
