WHO/Europe is convening a regional virtual consultation on genomics and precision medicine to shape the strategic direction for this field in the WHO European Region over the next 5 years (2025–2030). This full-day event will bring together leading experts, policy-makers and stakeholders to discuss how best to integrate genomics and precision medicine into national health systems, ensuring equitable access and sustainable implementation.
Why is this regional consultation important?
Genomics and precision medicine offer transformative potential for health care, from early disease detection and targeted treatments to improved health system efficiency and patient outcomes. At the same time, realizing these benefits requires smart investment, strengthened health infrastructure and capacity-building for health-care professionals. By prioritizing this area, countries can benefit from long-term savings and ensure that innovative health solutions are available, accessible and affordable for all.
Aligned with the WHO/Europe Access to Novel Medicines Platform (NMP), the new Regional Strategy on Harnessing Innovation for Public Health (2025–2030), and the Framework for Resilient and Sustainable Health Systems (2025–2030), this consultation will help set priorities for Member States and WHO/Europe’s role in supporting them.
Objectives of the regional consultation
The consultation will serve as a platform to:
- identify regional needs and priorities in genomics and precision medicine, highlighting where WHO/Europe’s support is most needed;
- gather expert insights on next steps for implementing these innovations effectively and equitably;
