Event highlights
WHO has recently delivered 200 thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) and spare parts to the National Centre for Radiobiology and Radiation Protection (NCRRP) in Bulgaria. These units will support continuous training and practical use by radiation specialists and emergency medical services staff.
As part of a joint chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear preparedness programme conducted by the European Commission and WHO, a specialized training course on radiation dosimetry took place on 8–9 October 2025 at the NCRRP in Sofia. The training brought together experts from the Ministry of Health of Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency, the Military Medical Academy, the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, the state enterprise “Radioactive Waste” and other national institutions.
The 2-part course – covering technical and operational aspects – equipped participants with essential knowledge on the use and maintenance of TLD systems, while fostering the exchange of experiences and best practices in radiation protection. Led by Andreas Köhler of RadPro International GmbH and Kamal Akbarov from the WHO Country Office in Ukraine, the sessions strengthened coordination among key national actors and reinforced Bulgaria’s preparedness and resilience against radiological and nuclear risks.
