Event highlights
The WHO Country Office in Bulgaria held a 2-day workshop on risk communication and community engagement and infodemic management (RCCE-IM) within the context of radiation emergency preparedness and response. The meeting brought together key national stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health, the National Centre for Radiobiology and Radiation Protection, the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency, the Ministry of Interior and the State Enterprise for Radioactive Waste Management.
Over the 2 days, participants reviewed Bulgaria’s multisectoral emergency preparedness and response system legislation, contingency plans and response capacities; discussed international cooperation mechanisms; and assessed radiology laboratory readiness.
A highlight was the presentation by Zhanat Kenbayeva, WHO headquarters, on the WHO-led Radiation Emergency Medical Preparedness and Assistance Network (REMPAN), showcasing how global collaboration strengthens international communication and coordination during radiological emergencies. Notably, Dr Kamal Akbarov from the WHO Country Office Ukraine shared the experience of responding to increased threats of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear emergencies in the context of the ongoing war.
The second day featured 2 lectures from WHO/Europe experts on risk communication, followed by a case study and a tabletop exercise to test RCCE protocols and community engagement strategies, including managing misinformation.
WHO expresses its appreciation to the European Commission for its generous support, and to all national partners and participants for their active engagement. These joint efforts continue to strengthen Bulgaria’s resilience and preparedness in line with international standards.
