Celebrating universal health coverage across the WHO European Region

Every year on 7 April, WHO celebrates World Health Day to mark the anniversary of its founding. This year’s celebrations focused on the themes of universal health coverage and primary health care.

Human chains showing support and solidarity for universal health coverage, a health gala, open-air events, live-streamed conferences, public events promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles – these were just some of the ways in which countries of the Region marked World Health Day this year.

These photos depict a sample of the many activities that commemorated this day and the common goal of working to achieve better health for all.

Hundreds of people gathered at open-air events held in Czechia, Kyrgyzstan (pictured) and the Republic of Moldova to learn about a range of topics, from universal health coverage and primary health care to healthy lifestyles.

The WHO Country Office in Kyrgyzstan joined efforts with the Ministry of Health, Bishkek Medical College and public health organizations to raise awareness of public health issues and risk factors such as tobacco, alcohol and inadequate physical activity. In Azerbaijan, people formed a solidarity chain in the shape of an umbrella – a common symbol of universal health coverage. But first, participants performed the traditional Yalli dance, symbolizing unity and the collective spirit.

In Czechia, 200 students from 8 medical faculties organized booths in 6 cities under the auspices of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations. At the booths they offered screenings of blood sugar and blood pressure as well as information on nutrition, exercise and self-examination for cancer. In this photo, a young visitor uses an ultraviolet lamp to learn about the correct technique for washing hands.

 In the Republic of Moldova, achievements of health professionals were recognized at the sixth edition of the country’s annual health gala. Pictured here is Elena Neaga, a family doctor in Balasesti Village. She is the first family doctor to be based there since the Republic of Moldova’s independence in 1991.

 Three hundred people from federal ministries and agencies, medical and public health institutions, academia, and civil society gathered in Moscow, Russian Federation, to hear about a shared vision for universal health coverage. In addition, people from more than 25 Russian regions participated through web streaming.
