In Torbalı district of İzmir province, Turkey, it is not easy for Syrian seasonal workers and refugees in improvised settlements to access health services. A team led by Dr Pavel Ursu, WHO Representative to Turkey, and by the Provincial Health Directorate visited the area to assess the health status and needs of the workers and their families.

Particular focus was placed on the vaccination status of Syrian children living in these settlements. The Turkish Ministry of Health provides routine vaccination to all refugees, regardless of their registration status.

In 2017, WHO supported a country-wide campaign conducted by Turkey’s Ministry of Health to vaccinate Syrian children aged 0–59 months. Overall, 413 000 children were reached, and more than 660 000 vaccine doses were provided during the 3-round campaign.

A new mobile health team has started providing health services to Syrian refugees in improvised settlements. This project is part of the Refugee Health Programme that aims to give all refugees access to health services, based on their specific needs and cultural relevance, while helping to ease the burden on the overstretched Turkish health system.

WHO supports the Ministry of Health in linking the health services offered at the Refugee Health Training Centres with outreach activities to the improvised settlements, conducted via mobile clinics. In 2017, these activities included over 440 000 free-of-charge health consultations, and numbers are expected to increase in 2018.
