On the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, WHO launches the ePortal on Age-friendly cities and communities

24th International Day of Older Persons 2014: Leaving no one behind: promoting a society for all

October 1st is officially the International Day of Older Persons, which was created to recognize and celebrate the achievements and contributions that older people make to our society.

The steady increase in life expectancy represents one of the greatest achievements of our society. However, the ageing population brings new challenges for an inclusive society for people of all ages.

Cities significantly influence people’s health through policies and interventions towards a socially and economically active, secure and healthy ageing community.

Age-friendly cities

Across the WHO European Region, A growing number of cities and communities worldwide are already taking active steps towards becoming more age-friendly.

The WHO Global Network of Age-friendly cities and communities (GNAFCC) was established to foster the exchange of experience and mutual learning between cities and communities worldwide. Any city or community that is committed to creating inclusive and accessible urban environments to benefit their ageing populations is welcome to join.

Launch of Age-Friendly World e-portal

ePortal is a web-based platform for information exchange, mutual support through the sharing of experience. The aim of the ePortal is to connect cities and communities that share the commitment to improve the quality of life of their older populations, as well as to facilitate the exchange of information and good practice.
