A new tobacco control law passed both houses of Parliament in Tajikistan at the end of 2017. President Emomali Rakhmon signed the law on 2 January 2018. It covers:
- 100% smoke-free indoor public places with few exceptions (prisons, psychiatric institutions and care homes for older people);
- a complete point-of-sale display ban;
- pictorial health warnings covering 75% of the front and back of tobacco packets and a ban on misleading descriptors; and
- sales restrictions.
The new law applies to all tobacco products, including cigarettes and cigars as well as hookahs, smokeless cigarettes and electronic cigarettes.
