Stick with the science: protect yourself from influenza and COVID-19 this season

It’s that time of year again.

As autumn begins, the circulation of influenza will soon start to increase across the WHO European Region. Together with other respiratory viruses, including COVID-19, which increased in circulation over the summer, influenza poses a serious risk to public health – particularly for older people, pregnant women, those with chronic conditions and anyone with a weakened immune system. The science is clear: vaccination remains the best way to protect yourself from severe illness and complications. The influenza virus is always evolving. So, every year, as the circulating strains of influenza change, scientists must update the composition of vaccines accordingly. Protection gained through vaccination also wanes over time. That’s why it’s important to get your influenza shot every year. An annual flu vaccination at the start of the season will help protect you and your community from this year’s most prevalent strains of flu.

Similarly, COVID-19 vaccines are updated as new variants emerge and protection gained through vaccination gradually wanes. So, those eligible should also boost their immunity by keeping their COVID-19 vaccination up to date.

Vaccination reduces the risk of getting severely ill, developing complications and requiring hospitalization. It saves lives and helps health systems cope during the busy winter months. A recent study based on data from several countries in the Region concluded that, between January 2022 and November 2023, COVID-19 vaccination reduced people’s risk of hospitalizations by more than half for the 6 months following vaccination.

Making informed choices

WHO/Europe’s “No one knows your risk like you do” campaign marks the beginning of the new influenza and COVID-19 season. Our message remains simple: by making informed and responsible choices, we can protect ourselves and others. WHO encourages everyone, especially those at higher risk, to prioritize vaccination and to integrate simple protective habits into everyday life.

  1. Get vaccinated when vaccines are offered to you.
  2. If you are sick, stay home.
  3. If you have symptoms, wear a mask.
  4. When sneezing, cover your mouth and nose.
  5. Clean your hands regularly.
  6. Open windows and doors regularly to let fresh air in.

Protecting against false information

This year we emphasize the importance of protecting yourself not just against viruses, but also against mis- and disinformation. False or misleading claims about vaccines and protective measures spread like wildfires online, fuelling confusion and mistrust and ultimately leaving people unprotected.

WHO urges everyone to seek reliable information: check your sources, verify facts and turn to trusted institutions, such as ministries of health and WHO.

Stick with the science. Get vaccinated. Stay safe this flu season.
