WHO has donated essential information technology equipment to Ukraine in a bid to bolster health data management in the country’s most conflict-affected regions. The donation of software, laptops, monitors, and autonomous internet and power sources, supports 83 regional workstations as well as the Kyiv City Information and Analytical Center for Medical Statistics. The donation will revolutionize data collection and reporting across 6 key regions – Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolayiv and Zaporizhzhia. It will also streamline the distribution of humanitarian aid and further enhance the regions’ capabilities for precise health risk analysis and forecasting.

A targeted solution

Regional workstations facilitate communication with health-care facilities and monitor infectious diseases, a critical function given the heightened risks associated with population displacement due to the war. In collaboration with national and regional health authorities, WHO aims to strengthen the ability of the country’s health system to navigate these intricate health challenges.

Denise Assaf, Health Information Officer, WHO Country Office in Ukraine, emphasized the strategic nature of this support: “Enabling Ukraine to harness data for targeted health interventions is central to our mission. This donation addresses pressing challenges at the analytical centres, such as obsolete equipment and software vulnerabilities, and equips 83 workstations across 6 oblasts. It’s a targeted solution for enhancing health-care resilience”.

This timely donation enables Ukrainian health statisticians in the most war-torn regions to employ one of WHO’s premier data management tools — the Health Resources and Services Availability Monitoring System (HeRAMS). This invaluable tool facilitates the adaptation of health responses to challenges presented by conflict or potential disease outbreaks.

With ongoing support from the United States Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), WHO reaffirms its commitment to enhancing health data management across Ukraine, with a particular emphasis on regions most affected by war.
