The 26th meeting of the European Regional Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication (RCC) takes place 18-20 June 2012 in Copenhagen, Denmark. In opening the meeting, RCC Chair David Salisbury said, “We never want to see [an outbreak like] the 2010 outbreak in Tajikistan happen again, but the risk remains until we have eradicated polio. To do this, we need to reach every community with polio vaccine, alongside strengthening and maintaining sensitive surveillance systems.”
The RCC is an independent panel of international public health experts, which reviews annual progress reports on polio immunization and surveillance from all 53 Member States. It reports the findings and recommends required actions to WHO. In 2002, the RCC certified the WHO European Region polio-free.
Preliminary findings from the 26th meeting will be posted on this web site in the coming days, followed by the complete meeting report.
