Health 2020 priority area four: creating supportive environments and resilient communities: a compendium of inspirational examples
Overview
This Compendium provides inspirational examples of building resilience at individual, community and system levels. It describes the innovative, on-the-ground actions taken by 13 countries to create supportive environments for strengthening resilience and its link to health and well-being outcomes. The examples, primarily gathered from community initiatives, are linked to the four types of resilience capacities: adaptive, absorptive, anticipatory and transformative. The Compendium covers a wide range of topics such as the role of resilience building in addressing human rights, health inequities, and environmental hazards and threats; and health-related topics such as communicable and noncommunicable diseases. Creating resilient communities and supportive environments for population health and well-being is one of the priority areas of Health 2020. Resilience is also a key element in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The Compendium follows and expands on two WHO publications released in 2017: Building resilience: a key pillar of Health 2020 and the Sustainable Development Goals and Strengthening resilience: a priority shared by Health 2020 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
