Action against antimicrobial resistance through the preservation of the environment

Overview

The environment can be a reservoir for antimicrobials and resistant pathogens through the discharge of untreated and treated wastewater and sludge. Biological and chemical pollutants that enter the environment can fundamentally influence and change AMR development, transmission and spread. New forms of resistant bacteria might also develop in the environment, although the full extent of these processes is still unknown.
