Smokefree homes factsheet - for policy makers

Overview

Why promoting smokefree homes is important

With the introduction of smokefree regulations in public places, home becomes a major source of exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke (SHS), particularly for children. SHS contains around 7000 chemicals, including toxic substances, irritants and about 70 carcinogens. Since 2004 SHS has been defined as carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
