Responding to the health needs of refugees and migrants

An estimated 101 million migrants, including 12.5 million refugees, live in the 53 countries of the WHO European Region. Refugees and migrants are likely to be healthy in general. However, they can be at risk of ill health while in transit or in destination countries due to poor living conditions and changes in lifestyle or a lack of access to health and other essential services.

Working to ensure better health for refugees and migrants, the CPA Division provides:

  • health leadership and governance mechanisms to facilitate health sector reforms;
  • the latest international evidence and knowledge;
  • tailored advice and support to countries;
  • technical guidance;
  • capacity-building;
  • communications and advocacy; and
  • a focal-point network for tri-regional collaboration together with the WHO regional offices for Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean.
