In-country work: the HEALTH-IQ project
The Quality of Care and Patient Safety team in Athens is working together with the government and health service-providing bodies in Greece to conduct a project entitled “Development and Implementation of a Framework for Quality Care” (abbreviated as HEALTH-IQ). The project assesses the contexts of primary health care, hospital care and long-term care, access to public health, and prevention procedures for both noncommunicable diseases and mental health. The main objectives over the project duration, from 2023–2025, include:
- developing a documented methodological guide for establishing permanent procedures to record and measure key quality performance indicators;
- creating a system for the receipt and evaluation of feedback from patients;
- developing an online and human-centred health system that ensures equal access to quality health services; and
- disseminating health quality standards to European Union Member States facing similar challenges.
These efforts seek to introduce standard procedures for the automation of quality assurance in health care and to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of national health systems, while simultaneously improving patient experience.
Health systems within and beyond the WHO European Region face critical issues related to the lack of integrated care, underutilization of services, lack of resources and reduced patient safety. In the case of Greece, it remains necessary to implement centralized procedures for assessing the quality of health care, in order to improve overall health and equity of access to quality health services for all.
