HIV continues to be a major global public health issue, having claimed 44.2 million [33.8–61.1 million] lives so far. 

 

In 2025, 570 000 [430 000–780 000] people died from HIV-related causes globally. There were approximately 41.0 million [35.3–47.5 million] people living with HIV (PLHIV) at the end of 2025 with 1.2 million [0.95–1.7 million] people becoming newly infected with HIV in 2025 globally. 

 

The WHO African Region is the most affected region, with 26.3 million [22.2–30.9 million] people living with HIV in 2025. Also, the WHO African Region accounts for 50% of the global new HIV infections.
