Vector Control Advisory Group
Independent evaluation of the public health value of innovative new tools, technologies and approaches for vector control is needed to enable WHO to provide evidence-based advice to Member States on whether their deployment is justified. This is essential to ensure that scarce resources available for disease control are used to maximum impact. In order to assist WHO in developing public health policy on new tools, the Vector Control Advisory Group (VCAG) assesses the public health value of new interventions and provides guidance on developing the evidence base required to inform such assessments.

Housing modifications: lethal house lures

How the intervention works: An example of a product being evaluated under this intervention class are In2Care® EaveTubes. The intervention that is currently being evaluated is a combination of housing improvement, including screening windows, closing eaves and other mosquito entry points, together with In2Care® EaveTubes. The tubes are installed in the eaves (open areas between the roof and walls) of houses. Netting treated with insecticide powder is then inserted in the tubes. Mosquitoes that are attracted to the odour and heat produced by humans inside the house are drawn to the tubes and come into contact with the insecticide-treated netting. The aim is to both reduce the entry of mosquitoes into houses and kill them, thereby reducing the risk of malaria transmission.

Disease(s) that may be reduced in prevalence or prevented: Malaria

Population(s) intended to be protected: If Lethal house lures are deployed at sufficient coverage, it is envisaged they will protect people in houses and in the wider community by reducing the number of malaria-carrying mosquitoes.

Status of review: The efficacy of household screening combined with In2Care®EaveTubes in reducing clinical episodes of malaria was assessed in a 2-year trial in Côte d’Ivoire that began in April 2017. The preliminary results of the study were reviewed by VCAG in November 2019.
