In January 2025 the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the “Strategy for optimizing national routine health information systems (RHIS): strengthening health information systems to deliver primary health care (PHC) and universal health coverage (UHC)”.
By enhancing RHIS, low- and middle-income countries, including Indonesia, can improve health service monitoring and delivery, particularly for PHC. The Strategy establishes principles for an integrated, interoperable, evidence-informed and partnership-driven RHIS, structured around five strategic goals with measurable interventions.
The Strategy is aligned with WHO’s Health Data Technical Package and aims to generate information to better manage health services and track national and global health targets. In Indonesia, strengthening RHIS is critical for supporting Ministry of Health-led programmes such as SATUSEHAT, Indonesia’s national health data ecosystem, and for integrating health data across PHC facilities, hospitals and community-based services.
The Strategy provides a clear vision, strategic goals, guiding principles and key interventions to improve health data collection, reporting, analysis and use at all levels – ensuring alignment with both public and private health sectors.
