WHO’s new publication "The role of purchasing arrangements for quality chronic care: a scoping review" examines how different methods of payment to health care providers impact quality of care for chronic diseases. By analyzing a range of approaches used globally, the publication highlights the effectiveness and challenges of these methods and underscores the critical need to invest in new technologies and resources.

Indonesia's national health insurance programme – Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional (JKN) – has in recent years introduced innovative purchasing arrangements to manage chronic disease conditions. One such programme – PROLANIS – focuses on providing regular patient consultations, health monitoring and patient engagement activities for people with diabetes or hypertension. The "Chronic disease management programme (‎PROLANIS)‎ in Indonesia: case study" details the impact of PROLANIS on improving quality of care and controlling costs, showcasing how strategic purchasing arrangements can enhance health care delivery for chronic diseases on a national scale. The case study informs the WHO and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development 2023 joint publication “Purchasing for quality chronic care: summary report.”
