Jakarta, 19 August 2024 – In response to preventing deaths due to AMR, the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) and World Health Organization (WHO) launched the National Strategy for Controlling Antimicrobial Resistance for the period 2025-2029 at the JW Marriott Hotel, Jakarta, on Monday (19/8).
Previously, cross-sector coordination had been carried out in handling AMR cases in Indonesia, with reference to Permenko PMK Number 07 of 2021 concerning the National Action Plan for Controlling Antimicrobial Resistance for the period 2020-2024.
Deputy Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Prof. dr. Dante Saksono Harbuwono said that the launch of the National Strategy for Controlling Antimicrobial Resistance was an important moment to learn from past mistakes and commit to efforts to prevent AMR resistance.
This National Strategy has three main foundations, namely effective governance, strategic information, and an external evaluation system.
"This National Strategy is built on four important pillars, namely prevention of infection, access to essential health services, timely and accurate diagnosis, and appropriate and quality-assured treatment," said Prof. Dante.
He hopes that the launch of the National Strategy for Controlling Antimicrobial Resistance will be a hope to save millions of people in the future.
Director General of Health Services dr. Azhar Jaya, S.H., SKM, MARS revealed that globally in 2019, there were 1.27 million deaths caused by antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This figure is projected to continue to increase and by 2050 it is estimated that it will cause 10 million deaths.
This national strategy is a preventive effort to address the increase in deaths due to AMR which is a global threat. "If we don't handle this properly, of course it will cause problems, especially in our country (Indonesia)," said Director General dr. Azhar.
The National Strategy for Controlling Antimicrobial Resistance contains 14 main interventions. This National Strategy will be used as input for compiling a national action plan for controlling AMR across sectors for the period 2025-2029.
WHO Acting Team Lead for Health Systems Prof. Roderick Salenga said the launch of the National Strategy for Controlling Antimicrobial Resistance was based on the WHO people-centred approach.
"This approach directly addresses the barriers people face when accessing health services to prevent, diagnose, and treat infections, including drug-resistant infections," said Prof. Salenga.
In other words, this approach prioritizes access and equity, which are important values in health transformation. "We hope that Indonesia's leadership will continue to inspire not only awareness, but also action," he said.
