Case study: Enhancing routine immunization and catch-up campaigns in North Sumatra

Overview

WHO Indonesia’s collaboration with the provincial health office (PHO) and district health offices (DHOs) in North Sumatra has yielded transformative results in routine immunization coverage. The support, particularly WHO’s continued advocacy, which culminated in the Durian initiative and paved the way for a phased catch-up campaign called Lemang, addressed critical gaps in routine immunization by fostering local government ownership, strengthening data systems, and mobilizing communities. This case illustrated WHO’s technical expertise in strategic planning and adapting innovative tools to empower local governments. Through WHO’s capacity building and advocacy support, North Sumatra achieved measurable progress in routine immunization, reducing zero dose cases and strengthening immunization systems.

This activity is supported by the Australian Government.
