Public health advice on gender considerations during Ebola disease outbreaks

Overview

This public health advice addresses the need to integrate gender considerations into Ebola outbreak preparedness and response measures.  It outlines practical actions to identify and act on gender-specific differences in risks, needs and barriers. There is particular emphasis on risk communication and community engagement, equitable access to services, protection and participation.  The activities are presented in seven themes: gender analyses; cross-pillar response; protection for pregnant and breastfeeding women; engagement with caregivers; protection risks including gender-based violence and sexual misconduct; and cultural acceptance.

The advice is intended for government departments; national, subnational and local authorities; health and social service providers; and response personnel, including those working at the community level.

This publication is based on current evidence and good public health practices and is intended to complement guidance from national health authorities and humanitarian partners.
