The Steering Committee tasked with coordinating the activities of the Pandemic Fund project in Kazakhstan held its first meeting in Astana on 19 April. The Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan is Chair of the Steering Committee, and WHO is serving as Secretariat.
The event was attended by representatives of WHO, the World Bank, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and experts from the Ministry of Health. Vice Minister of Health and Chief State Sanitary Doctor Aizhan Yesmagambetova chaired the meeting.
The agenda included discussions of plans for the implementation of activities within the framework of the project, including:
- strengthening the regulatory framework to ensure preparedness and response to pandemics
- strengthening sanitary control at the state border and entry points
- increasing the efficiency of epidemiological surveillance systems
- strengthening laboratory services
- building capacity in human resources.

The WHO Country Office in Kazakhstan, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and with support from USAID and the World Bank, will conduct the first meeting of the Steering Committee for the implementation of the Pandemic Fund project in Kazakhstan. The Country Office will coordinate the implementation of this grant in the country and provide general technical support to the Ministry of Health.
Kazakhstan is one of 36 countries in the WHO European Region that received a country grant of US$ 19 million and a multicountry grant of US$ 27 million for a period of 3 years to strengthen pandemic preparedness.
