Digital vaccination records: how one Kyrgyz mother stays on track with her children’s health

20 February 2025

For Meerim Baktybek kyzy, a 33-year-old mother of 3 and procurement specialist in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, keeping track of her children’s vaccinations used to be a challenge. Now, thanks to a mobile app, Tunduk, developed and provided by the government and available to everyone in the country, she never has to worry about missing an appointment or losing vital records.

“All my children’s vaccination records are on my phone. The app sends personalized reminders and provides details about each vaccine. It gives me peace of mind and more time to focus on my family,” she shares.

The app uses the immunization management system, iEmdoo, part of Kyrgyzstan’s Sanarip MED digital health ecosystem, which was developed with support from the European Union and WHO to help modernize the country’s health-care infrastructure. From birth, children receive a digital vaccination card, ensuring real-time updates on immunizations, exemptions and medical notes – all securely accessible to their parents via the Tunduk app.

Safeguarding health

For parents like Meerim, this innovation eliminates the hassle of managing paper records and ensures timely vaccinations. “I no longer have to remember dates or search for documents. The app takes care of it,” she says.

“The integration of digital tools into Kyrgyzstan’s health-care system is a testament to our commitment to improving public health. By supporting projects like iEmdoo, we are not only advancing immunization efforts but also moving closer to the goal of universal health coverage for all,” said Dr Liviu Vedrasco, WHO Representative to Kyrgyzstan.

With iEmdoo, Kyrgyzstan is taking a major step in digital health care, making vaccination records more accurate, accessible and easy to manage. Already implemented in Bishkek maternity hospitals, the system is continually evolving, with WHO evaluations confirming its success. Personalized vaccination reminders are helping families stay informed so they can plan ahead and not miss any scheduled vaccination doses, while ongoing technical improvements will further enhance the system’s impact. Thanks to this digital transformation, families across Kyrgyzstan can now better safeguard their children’s health.

Partnership with the European Union

Support for development of the iEmdoo system is part of a 4-year project (2022–2026), jointly funded by the European Union and WHO, to strengthen immunization and the digitalization of health systems towards advancing universal health coverage in the central Asian republics (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan). The project supports ministries of health in achieving the goals and targets of the European Immunization Agenda 2030.
