News release

Like many other countries in South East Asia, Lao PDR is experiencing a significant number of Dengue cases.   Dengue is a virus spread through mosquito bites. It causes high fever and flu-like symptoms.  Most people infected with Dengue make a full recovery after a few days of bed rest. However, a minority of people infected get severe Dengue. This can kill.

The WHO Country Office in Laos has been working with the Ministry of Health’s Centre for Information & Education on Health to produce Lao language risk communication Infographics about Dengue. These are being promoted by the Centre and its country-wide network using social media, as well as mass media (radio and TV) and community level organizations.

Their aim is to help ensure people in Lao PDR know to:

  • Seek medical care if they or a loved one have symptoms of severe Dengue
  •  Look after themselves at home if they have a milder Dengue infection

Seeking treatment early greatly reduces the risk of dying from severe Dengue
