Celebrating International Women Day with a difference

The Embassies of France, Philippines, Timor-Leste, the United States and the Office of the Embassy of Canada together with four UN Head of Agencies and senior women leaders from government, businesses and the international community joined a Speed Mentoring Evening to inspire young Lao women to mark International Women Day. These women leaders from different countries display different type of leadership, for example, political, government and community, and are role models in their areas of work.

Dr Juliet Fleischl, WHO Representative said “I am glad to be a part of this mentoring event, to meet 50 young aspiring women who will become the future leaders of Laos. In line with the theme, #Time is now, we need to think, act and be gender inclusive, to support gender equality and advancement of women in Lao PDR.”

Dr Fleischl encourages the mentee to persevere in what she believes in, and also provided advices on career development.


The International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to reflect and celebrate the progress made by women who have played extraordinary roles in their countries and communities for women’s rights, equality and justice. There have been a global movement against sexual harassment, violence and discrimination against women.

WHO staff association celebrated International Women Day with a sport activity

Two friendly football matches were held on 2 March between the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and development partners in Vientiane Capital. The fast-paced and electrifying women’s match had spectators cheering from the sideline with WHO and partners defeating the MOH 5-0. Whilst the men’s match saw the MOH beat WHO and partners 10-5.

The event provided an opportunity to unite the Ministry of Health, WHO and development partners in celebrating gender inclusiveness and the achievements of women.
