WHO honours health workers for World Humanitarian Day
#ThanksHealthHero Campaign
19 August 2015 / GENEVA- To mark the World Humanitarian Day, WHO has launched a campaign to honour health workers who provide healthcare under challenging circumstances - in conflicts, natural disasters or resource poor settings. Read stories of health heroes around the world who make sacrifices every day to help others and honour them through the campaign #ThanksHealthHero.
One such health hero is midwife Sadiqa Husseini pictured here from Afghanistan, where a woman dies from complications due to pregnancy or birth every 27 minutes. Sadiqa Husseini was there the night her sister nearly bled to death giving birth to her first child. That moment, she vowed to become a midwife, and she is now one of 3,000 midwives who graduated in Afghanistan and is working to reduce maternal mortality in her community.
