Apply to be a member of the WHO civil society task force on antimicrobial resistance (AMR): Call for expressions of interest

7 May 2025
Expression of interest

Applications must be submitted no later than 31 May 2025

The World Health Organization (WHO) is pleased to announce a call for expressions of interests from representatives of civil society organizations who have a background of work on AMR-related issues.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is responsible for more than 1 million deaths a year and is projected to be directly responsible for 39 million deaths between 2025 and 2050, in the absence of effective interventions. AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial agents. As a result of drug resistance, antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents become ineffective and infections become increasingly difficult or impossible to treat, increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death. Misuse and overuse of antimicrobials to treat, prevent or control infections is primarily responsible for AMR.

The role of civil society is acknowledged in the Global Action Plan on AMR 2015, which still guides the global AMR response. According to that document, civil society can play a significant role in increasing awareness and understanding of AMR, improving hygiene practices and enhancing access to and stewardship of antimicrobials. The political declaration of the United Nations General Assembly High-level Meeting on AMR 2024 calls for involvement of civil society in global, national and local governance of AMR to ensure optimal access to health products for managing infections and also their involvement in initiatives for a globally coordinated AMR response. WHO is establishing a civil society task force to guide and strengthen the Organization’s outreach to civil society organizations on AMR.
