Purpose of consultancy

To contribute to the Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Health with key products in the area of interventions in health and environment and the Climate Change and Health (CCH) team with the preparation of COP29-30 activities.

Background

Within the Division of Healthier Populations (HEP), the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health (ECH) works to assess the health implications of environmental risk factors and includes a team specifically working on climate change, with the objective of providing international leadership of a comprehensive health response to climate change, which enhances population resilience to climate risks and health-promoting climate change mitigation policies. The World Health Organization's (WHO) work on climate change is mandated and guided by a World Health Assembly Resolution (61.19) and a work plan approved by the WHO Executive Board in its 136th session and includes strengthening partnerships, raising awareness, promoting and guiding the generation of scientific evidence, and providing policy and technical expertise to the implementation of the public health response to climate change.

Deliverables

Contribute to the Director’s office on activities related to Climate Change and Health:

  1. Contribute to drafting information products in the area of interventions in health and environment. This includes contributing to updating and disseminating further versions of the Compendium of interventions.
  2. Draft various briefings and summaries of the department’s activities in relation to CCH and  COP-related activities.
  3. Contribute to drafting the COP29 Special report on climate change and health.

Provide input to the Climate Change and Health (CCH) unit:

  1. Health and Climate Web management.
  2. Facilitate the Monitoring of the Health Commitments taken at the COP28.
  3. Facilitate the organization of WHO Global Partnership Engagement strategy for COP29-30.
  4. Contribute to the development of the Road map toward Carbon Neutral WHO.

Qualifications, experience, skills and languages

Educational qualifications

  • Essential: Minimum first university degree in Public Health, Environmental health, epidemiology, or equivalent.
  • Desirable: Advanced university degree in Public Health, Environment, Environmental health, epidemiology, or equivalent.

Experience

Essential:

  • 5 to 10 years’ experience with the technical and scientific areas addressed under the WHO work plan on Health and Climate Change.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in building cross-sectoral partnerships, including among UN agencies and international institutions.

    Desirable:

  • Experience in project management.
  • Experience in high-level event planning involving representatives from governments, multilateral, and non-governmental organizations.

    Skills/Knowledge

    Essential:

  • Strong writing skills in the preparation of technical and scientific reports, project briefs, peer-reviewed publications, etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills,
  • Ability to work in international settings with staff from various geographical regions. 
  • Technical knowledge of health linkages with climate change, social and environmental determinants of health, One Health, and Planetary Health.

    Languages and level required

  • Essential: Expert knowledge of English.
  • Desirable: Intermediate knowledge of French, Spanish, or other UN languages.
