Call for Expression of Interest: Consultancy in the Air Quality and Health (AQH) unit No. 2

Deadline: 26 March 2021

8 March 2021
Expression of interest
The consultant will be expected to work remotely.

The objective of the Air Quality and Health (AQH) unit in the WHO Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health is to promote health sector interventions, as well as interventions in economic sectors (e.g. housing, transport, energy) that reduce environmental health risks, promote better health, and optimize the health co-benefits of sustainable development and climate change mitigation policies.

AQH activities aim to address the urgent need for the health sector to respond to the effects on health associated with air pollution. One of the key activities is to inform policymakers and the broad public on the extent of population exposure to and health impacts from poor air quality. Accordingly, WHO is a custodial agency of three air pollution‐related Sustainable Developments Goals (SDG) Indicators and is hosting several databases related to ambient and household air pollution. In order to support these monitoring and reporting activities, WHO is establishing several Expert Working Groups (EWG) under the Global Air Pollution and Health ‐ Technical Advisory Group, including one on Health Impact Assessment, which will cover topics such as exposure assessment, health outcomes, and exposure-response functions and methodologies for source‐attribution of the burden of disease. One of the objectives of the latter will be to advise WHO on which health outcomes and exposure-response functions to use for the next SDG 3.9.1 reporting.

The purpose of this consultancy is to support WHO’s work on statistics related to the health impact of air pollution. More specifically, the objective of this consultancy is to support WHO’s Expert Working Group on Health Impact Assessment and more specifically the work on exposure-response functions for air pollution. The selected candidate will build a repository with epidemiological studies related to mortality and morbidity from particulate matter and other pollutants, support the unit in organizing the EWG meetings and in the development of integrated exposure-response functions, and in calculating the burden of disease from air pollution for SDG 3.9.1 reporting.
